The Uttarakhand High Court on Monday requested a response from the state and federal governments on the issue of the lack of playgrounds for kids within the next two weeks after taking suo motu notice of a video posted by cricketer Virat Kohli. In a clip shared by Kohl, he revealed the realities of sports, while interacting with some children. The top court stated that many locations lack playgrounds for kids.

A division bench of Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi and Justice Rakesh Thapliyal sent notices to the Government of India's youth affairs and sports secretaries, the sports secretary for Uttarakhand, and the secretaries for urban development. The next hearing will take place on October 9. The court has inquired as to what policies the government has put in place to offer playgrounds for kids.

The court also asked if any Khelo India programmes required the construction of playgrounds for kids' physical development. According to the court, sports increase physical fitness and call for infrastructure. It stated that among other things, children now spend their time on computers, smartphones, and laptops.

Children who play "gully" (street) cricket complained in writing to the chief justice that there is not enough room for them to play without disturbing the calm of the neighbourhood. The high court has requested the government to disclose its policy for the development of play areas for kids, noting that playgrounds are crucial for kids.
