The Sri Lankan all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga is reportedly set to become the new captain of the national team in the T20I format. The change in the leadership for Sri Lanka in limited overs cricket is expected to happen after a dismal showing from the national team during the Asia Cup and ODI World Cup in 2023.

Wanindu Hasaranga, who wasn’t part of the aforementioned tournaments for Sri Lanka due to a hamstring injury, has been one of the most consistent performers with both bat and ball in recent years. With that, the 26-year-old established himself as a reliable cricketer in the national team, opening up the possibility of becoming the new captain in the T20I format.

The report quoted by India.com about the new development stated, “All-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga is tipped to be named the captain of the Sri Lanka T20 squad, while it has been confirmed that Dimuth Karunaratne will remain the Test Captain.” “The SLC Selection Committee is slated to meet again on Monday and make a decision ahead of Zimbabwe’s Tour of Sri Lanka in January 2024.”

Danushka Aravinda, the Sports Pavilion website journalist in Sri Lanka, sent out a post on his X account, revealing the preliminary T20I squad for the national team on their tour to Zimbabwe. Apart from naming Wanindu Hasaranga as captain of Sri Lanka, he also stated that Angelo Mathews, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, and Akila Dananjaya, among others, could make their return in the shortest format.
