After losing the away leg 1-0 against Al-Ain, Cristiano Ronaldo-led Al-Nassr came back in the second leg and defeated the UAE side 4-3, which led to the penalty shootout won by the visitors 3-1. After the Saudi Pro League club's exit from the AFC Champions League quarter-final, Cristiano Ronaldo was blasted by an Al-Nassr fan for missing an easy goal and demanded the Portuguese legend's exit.

After failing to score a single goal at the Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium, Al-Nassr hosted Al-Ain for the second leg at the Al-Awwal Stadium and went on to win the fixture 4-3. However, the one-goal difference levelled both sides on the aggregate score, forcing a penalty.

Apart from Ronaldo, no Al-Nassr player could score the penalty as Al-Ain beat the hosts 3-1 on penalties. With this loss, Al-Nassr's AFC Champions League campaign ended while Al-Ain qualified for the semi-finals.
