It was a night to forget for Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana as he made two massive blunders, with the second one costing his team an away win over Lyon in the UEFA Europa League (UEL) quarter-finals first leg at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais on Thursday, April 10. With that, Manchester United had to settle for a 2-2 draw, but they will have the chance to put things right next Thursday at Old Trafford in the second leg of the UEL quarter-finals.
During the first half, Manchester United went behind a goal in the 25th minute with the first blunder of the night from Andre Onana as he failed to get a strong hand to clear a free-kick from Thiago Almada, which bounced inside the six yard box before finding its way into the back of the net. After Lyon went ahead, the visitors responded well, and they levelled the scoreline at 1-1 as Lenny Yoro scored his first goal in a Manchester United jersey with the final kick of the first half.
After a pulsating battle for long periods in the second half, Manchester United took the 2-1 lead in the 88th minute after substitute Joshua Zirkzee headed a looping cross from his captain Bruno Fernandes. It looked as if the visitors would take the spoils to Manchester for the second leg of the UEL quarter-finals, but Rayan Chekri had other ideas as he tapped home the rebound from Andre Onana, who had spilled a hopeful shot at goal from Georges Mikautadze.
But I'm really confident in Andre (Onana): Ruben Amorim shows confidence in Man Utd goalkeeper after tough day
Ruben Amorim, the Manchester United manager, protected his goalkeeper Andre Onana by saying, as per BBC Sport, “If you look at the season I've made more mistakes than them during these last games and during these last months. There's nothing I can say to Andre in this moment that will help him, so the most important thing is to be natural and then when the time comes I will choose the best XI to play. But I'm really confident in Andre.”
Moreover, Manchester United are slated to play against Newcastle at the St. James’ Park in the Premier League on Sunday, April 14 before their second leg of the UEL quarter-finals next Thursday against Lyon at home.
