The main event of night two of the first-ever two night WWE SummerSlam Premium Live Event (PLE) ended in complete chaos after Brock Lesnar made his shocking return to the promotion in nearly two years. The Beast Incarnate took out John Cena with a thunderous F5 after the latter had gone through a hellacious street fight against Cody Rhodes, which had ended for him in losing the WWE Championship.

Just a couple of nights ago on SmackDown, John Cena, who is currently on his farewell tour, vowed to Cody Rhodes to bring his best version to WWE SummerSlam, hinting at a potential babyface turn, and he more than delivered on his promise. It was one of the greatest WWE Championship matches in recent memory with Cena and Rhodes enthralling thousands in attendance inside the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

In the latter stages of the highly pulsating contest, Cody Rhodes hit John Cena with three consecutive Cross Rhodes, but the champion kicked out at the last possible second to the utter disbelief of the challenger. Rhodes introduced the WWE Championship belt to the match, psyching himself up to use it as a weapon, but Cena ducked in a nick of time before hitting an Attitude Adjustment.

Moments later, he executed a second Attitude Adjustment on Cody Rhodes before an Avalanche Attitude Adjustment from the second turnbuckle, but the champion wasn’t able to keep down the challenger. Ultimately, Rhodes put Cena through the table with an Avalanche Cody Cutter before saluting him and finishing him off with a Cross Rhodes, to win the WWE Championship for the second time in his career.

After a gruelling battle, John Cena picked up the WWE Championship belt and presented it to Cody Rhodes in a passing of the torch moment before soaking in the adulation from the fans, shedding his heel persona for good. Just as John Cena looked to exit the ring, a familiar theme song played on the titantron, and it was none other than Brock Lesnar making his way to the ring with a purpose.

Lesnar circled Cena in the ringside area before he suddenly ran inside the ring and took out his longstanding rival with an F5, to close out WWE SummerSlam.
