Newcastle United came out victorious against Liverpool in the EFL Cup final, also known as the Carabao Cup, on 16th March 2025 at the Wembley Stadium in London. Newcastle shocked football fans around the world with a 2-1 victory against Liverpool, which also marked the end of their 70-year trophy drought since their 1955 FA Cup win. The match's opening goal came just before halftime, when Newcastle's defender Dan Burn headed in a corner, giving his team a 1-0 lead. Eight minutes into the second half, Alexander Isak extended Newcastle's advantage with a half-volley. Liverpool’s Federico Chiesa scored a goal in the 90+4 minutes but it was only a consolation, as the Magpies went on to win the final and lift the trophy.
Newcastle defender Dan Burn was elated on the victory and can be seen dancing in the Newcastle dressing room post the match. The club put out a post on their official X account, showing the iconic celebration from the English defender and captioned it, "He’s from Blyth", referring to the English town to which Burn belongs. The center-back’s goal was crucial for Newcastle to break the deadlock in this important final.
Mo Salah fails to deliver yet again
It has been an extremely disappointing week for Liverpool as they have been knocked out of two cup competitions. After getting knocked out of the Champions League by PSG, they have now also missed out on winning their first piece of silverware of the season after this loss in the Cup final. One particular Liverpool player who has been under scrutiny for his performance in the cup final is Mohammed Salah.
Salah, who has undoubtedly been Liverpool's best player this season, failed to create a single chance and did not register even one shot throughout the match. This isn’t the first time that Mo Salah has left his team high and dry during important matches. According to a stat, in the 11 finals or title matches that Mo Salah has played for Liverpool, he has only one assist and two goals to his name; both of them ironically being penalty goals.
