In a bizarre turn of events, former Australian opener David Warner accidentally hit himself on the back of the head with his bat as it broke while attempting a stroke on Riley Meredith’s delivery in the BBL 2024-25 game. The Sydney Thunder captain, who played his final international match in June last year, found a way to put the moment behind him as he went past his fifty in a laboured innings in 46 balls against the Hobart Hurricanes at the Bellerive Oval.
Notably, after being put into bat first by Hobart Hurricanes captain Nathan Ellis on a decent batting surface, David Warner walked out to bat with newest Australian Test opener Sam Konstas. On the first ball of the fourth over of the Sydney Thunder innings, a wide one outside the off stump from Riley Meredith around the fuller length area, David Warner threw his bat at it on the up before it snapped from the handle, and the momentum led to it accidentally finding the back of the head.

David Warner scored 88 off 66 with just seven fours for Thunder versus Hurricanes in BBL
After getting shaken by the bat hitting him on the back of the head, David Warner looked at it in surprise before calling for the Sydney Thunder dressing room to bring him a spare one. Fortunately, Warner was alright to continue his innings for the Thunder, who are currently on the top of the BBL 2024-25 table with nine points in seven matches, ahead of their city rivals Sydney Sixers on the NRR metric.
Ultimately, David Warner held the Sydney Thunder innings together against a very impressive Hobart Hurricanes bowling lineup, building small but key partnerships with the middle order. He ended up scoring unbeaten 88 runs in 66 balls with just seven fours, to ensure that the Thunder put up a competitive total of 164/6 runs on the board in their allotted overs, for challenging the Hurricanes batters in front of their home fans at the Bellerive Oval.
A win in this match will consolidate the first place of the Sydney Thunder on the BBL 2024-25 points table ahead of the Sydney Sixers.
