The German hockey star, Niklas Wellen shoved Duco Telgenkamp of the Netherlands after the conclusion of a thrilling final in the men’s hockey event at the Paris Olympics 2024. After the Netherlands defeated Germany to win the gold medal at the Stade Yves-du-Manoir, Duco Telgenkamp gestured the German goalkeeper, Jean Danneberg, to shut up, which led to his teammate Niklas Wellen taking matters into his own hands.

At full-time, the Netherlands and Germany were levelled at 1-1 after two goals in the fourth quarter. Thierry Brinkman, the captain of Netherlands, opened the scoring in the 46th minute before Thies Prinz got the equaliser for Germany in the 50th minute.

In the penalty shootout, Jean Danneberg managed to stop two attempts out of five, but in response, the Dutch goalkeeper, Pirmin Blaak, ensured that three of the four German players didn’t score in the penalty shootout. It was Duco Telgenkamp, who converted the decisive penalty in the shootout, to secure a goal medal for the Netherlands with a 3-1 scoreline.

Shortly after, Duco Telgenkamp and Niklas Wellen were shoving each other, which led to the officials and their respective teammates separating them. When Duco Telgenkamp was asked about what happened at the Stade Yves-du-Manoir, he said, “Nothing. We won gold. Very happy. Emotions were high. That’s it.”

Christopher Ruehr was disappointed about losing the Olympic final and said, “Definitely tough. It was an open game. We could have won. But also just a very tough game, and in the end the shootout is always a little bit of luck and the Dutch were luckier today.”
