The Day 4 of the ongoing Test between India and England began perfectly for the home side as they struck some early blows. Ravindra Jadeja and Ajinkya Rahane were dismissed early in the first session and few minutes later, Moeen Ali took the all-important wicket of Virat Kohli. India's score read 312/6 and the home side were on top at that time.

This is when Shardul Thakur joined hands with Rishabh Pant and England were just a wicket away from getting into India's tail. Things were poised very evenly at that time and the contest could have turned either side after lunch. As the two batsmen walked out to bat in the second session, they took the game completely out of England's grasp as they added runs for fun.

England make a complete mess of a golden opportunity

The conditions were brilliant for batting as Thakur & Pant absolutely piled misery on English bowlers with some brilliant stroke-making. England finally got an opportunity to end the partnership when there was a huge mix-up between the wickets.

As Rishabh Pant pushed an Ollie Robinson delivery down the leg side, he called for a quick single. However, Shardul Thakur was not interested in the run at the other end. Pant was at half-way down the crease when Moeen Ali threw the ball at the striker's end as it missed the stumps.

It looked like England would still be able to run out Pant with the ball going towards Haseeb Hameed who was the fielder backing up. But the English fielder failed to gather the ball in first attempt and before he could return the ball to Jonny Bairstow, Pant was safely home as Joe Root was left visibly disappointed with the sequence of events.

Thakur and Pant score fifties at The Oval

The missed opportunity did hurt England as the duo went on to complete a 100-run partnership for the 7th wicket. Both the batsmen were eventually dismissed soon after reaching their fifties as they took India's lead over 300 runs putting them in the driving seat in 4th Test. While Thakur scored 60 off 72, Pant's knock ended on 50 off 106.
