Former India cricketer Harbhajan Singh took oath as a Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) on Monday along with 28 other MPs. Singh, who is an MP from the state of Punjab, took oath in the presence of Rajya Sabha speaker Venkaiah Naidu. Notably, Harbhajan Singh is a cadre of the Aam Aadmi Party.

The 42-year-old also shared the video of him taking oath as the MP with a strong caption. The former cricketer promised to protect the Constitution of India and also promised to do his best for the people of Punjab and the country.

“Took Oath as Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) to protect the Constitution, Rule of Law, and Dignity of the House. I will do my best for the people of Punjab and Nation .. Jai Hind Jai Bharat,” wrote Singh alongside the video of him taking the oath. In the video, Singh is heard taking the oath in Punjabi, which is constitutionally recognised language.

“I, Harbhajan Singh Plaha who has been elected as a member of Rajya Sabha swear to God that I will impose faith in the Constitution of India and will stay loyal to it. I will also maintain the sovereignty and integrity of India. I will faithfully perform the duty which I am going to handle,” said Harbhajan while taking the oath.

After taking oath as a Rajya Sabha MP, Harbhajan joins the likes of legendary Indian batter Sachin Tendulkar, former batter Navjot Singh Sidhu and former skippers Mohammad Azharuddin and Gautam Gambhir, among others who joined politics after retiring from cricket.

Notably, Singh was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the Aam Aadmi Party as one of their five candidates from the state of Punjab in March 2022. He won unopposed and was officially elected as a Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha. Apart from serving as an MP, Singh is also an active commentator.
