The IPL 2023 fixture between Kolkata Knight Riders and Gujarat Titans saw an early injury concern for the defending champions. Fast bowler Mohit Sharma hurt himself as he attempted to field  Rahmanullah Gurbaz's shot towards mid-wicket.  The incident took place on the sixth delivery of the first over where Sharma put in a dive and injured his hand stopping the ball.

In the next over, the pacer was off the field and was spotted getting treatment in the dugout with ice. This could be a big blow for the Titans as Mohit Sharma has had a dream 2023 season of being one of the most economical bowlers in the tournament.

But the injury wasn't a major issue as Sharma returned to the field and completed a stunning catch to dismiss Shardul Thakur. But as the match progressed forward, Kolkata gained the upper hand thanks to a blistering finish by Andre Russell. The big West Indian came out towards the end of the innings and smashed 34 runs in just 19 balls with two fours and three sixes.

Reacting to this performance, Russell said, "Feeling good. I think looking at the scoreboard Im not that happy but we have good bowlers. This looks like a 190-200 wicket, we are maybe short. We just need to bowl to our plans. Im backing each and every bowler and myself with the ball. (On playing at Eden) Means a lot, the love I get from the fans is crazy when Im in Kolkata. This franchise is like family to me."
