Harmanpreet Kaur-led India are taking on Chamari Athapaththu’s Sri Lanka in their first match of Asia Cup 2022. The Women in Blue lost the toss and got the invitation to bat first. It was a troublesome start for India as they lost a couple of early wickets. However, a fine half-century from Jemimah Rodrigues and some crucial contributions from others helped India post a decent 150/6 in their 20 overs.

While India had a not-so-good start with the bat, they had a perfect start with the ball as Deepti Sharma removed the opposition captain in the fourth over of the Sri Lanka innings itself. However, it came at the cost of their wicketkeeper’s injury. Richa Ghosh walked off the field after injuring her ankle while attempting to take Athapaththu’s catch.

As the batter skied a sweep shot, the ball went straight up in the air. Ghosh ran for the catch from behind the stumps. However, Renuka Singh also came for it and looked in a better position to take the catch. Hence, Ghosh pulled out of her attempt at the last minute but her right ankle twisted when she stopped. She looked in a lot of pain. Eventually, Ghosh was taken off the field.

However, the wicketkeeper batter shortly returned to the field and resumed her duties.

Meanwhile, India are slowly tightening their grip on the game as they have already dismissed four Sri Lankan batters in the first half of Sri Lanka's innings. While Deepti Sharma got Athapaththu, Sri Lanka lost two wickets (Harshitha Madavi and Malsha Shehani) to runouts. Pooja Vastrakar gave the fourth blow as she trapped Nilakshi de Silva lbw.
