Selhurst Park witnessed an incredible 100th anniversary edition and sensational farewell to one of its favourite servants Joel Ward. Following Crystal Palace’s 4-2 win over Wolves in the 2024-25 Premier League game, Ward’s 13-year stint with Eagles ended. It was Ward’s final appearance at Selhurst Park as Palace were playing their last home game of the season. Ward wore the captain’s armband in his last appearance at iconic Selhurst Park. After the match, Adam Wharton was seen in the middle of the field to celebrate Ward’s farewell.

Wharton couldn’t show up in the contest against Wolves due to concussion he suffered at the FA Cup 2024-25 final against Manchester City, held at Wembley Stadium on May 17. In his 13-year career for Crystal Palace, Ward racked up five goals in 330 appearances. Ward will be satiated with his tenure with the club as he became the part of the team that won the first major title in 120 years.

Ward breaks down in tears while addressing the farewell speech

Following the game, when Joel Ward took the mic to deliver the speech, the 35-year-old broke down and thanked his family for support. He expressed gratitude to his parents, siblings, spouse, and kids. He termed the moment difficult for him. During the massive event, his wife Jess Ward and kids were also present. The camera also showed his spouse getting emotional during the English player’s address to the spectators.

“Now this is a difficult one. My family from day one has given me everything. My mom and dad for driving me up and down the country, for supporting me through thick and thin. My sister, my brother, for standing by my side and sharing in this journey. But the most precious of all of that is my wife, my two boys, and my daughter, who was born on Thursday. It’s a real honour, I love them to pieces. They’ve been with me every step of the way and it’s the biggest honour like I said, in the interview to walk out with my family on this pitch,” said Ward.
