England scripted a resilient comeback against New Zealand after being reduced to a score of 55/6 as they ended their first innings at the score of 360. The two protagonists of this fight back were Jonny Bairstow and debutant Jamie Overton who combined to stitch a massive record-breaking partnership of 241 runs. Bairstow scored a brilliant knock of 162 runs from 157 balls with 24 fours.

But the day didn’t end well for the debutant as he missed out on a historic century as he was dismissed on 97 by Trent Boult. The Rajasthan Royals seamer delivered a beautiful pitched-up ball that was tailing away and managed to get Overton pushing.

The ball found the edge and went straight into Daryl Mitchell’s hand in the first slip. Overton was extremely disappointed as he walked back to the pavilion. But here, his batting partner Jonny Bairstow was seen consoling Overton, who received a standing ovation from the ground.

It was obviously disappointing but I feel I've contributed to the team: Overton

Reacting to this knock, Jamie Overton talked about how he was disappointed with missing out on his century but was happy to put England in a great position. He said, "Obviously I was very disappointed getting out on 97.”

“But me and Jonny put us in a great position. And that knock from Broady (42 off 36) coming in and getting us into a lead has put us in a great place going into the second innings. It was obviously disappointing but I feel I've contributed to the team more than enough," he continued.
