Mirabai Chanu successfully defended her gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games as the Indian lifter finished at the top of the podium for the second consecutive edition of the Games. Having won a gold medal at the 2018 Gold Coast Games, Chanu walked out as a hot favorite and the 27-year-old proved it with her performance in the Women’s 49kg final event.

She won the gold medal at the 2022 Birmingham Games as well with a massive lift of 201kg. Although Chanu already claimed the gold medal in her first attempt where she lifted 109kg, the 27-year-old went for two more attempts. She lifted 113kg in the second attempt to bring her total lift to 201kg. However, she failed in her third attempt where the Indian went for 115kg.

While Chanu’s two attempts in the Clean and Jerk round were intended at creating a record (which she successfully did), her first attempt was solely focused on securing the gold medal. The Indian made her fans wait for a while as she was the last to lift in both rounds (as she had the highest registered weights for both rounds) but once she was in, the wait seemed worth it.

Right in her first attempt, Chanu went for a 109kg lift and she pulled it off effortlessly to bring the first gold for India at CWG 2022. She also knew the worth of that lift as she had a wide smile on her face as soon as the buzzer came out and she dropped the barbell. It seemed she could see the whole country feeling proud.

Another feather in a well-decorated crown

This was not the first instance Chanu has made the nation proud. The 27-year-old already has a really illustrious career. Chanu now has three Commonwealth Games medals, an Olympic medal, and a World Championships medal. She won her first CWG medal in 2014 by winning a silver in the 48 Kg weight category. The second one game in the 2018 edition where she won gold, and on Saturday came the third medal (second gold) at CWG 2022.
