After a disappointing end to the T20 World Cup 2022, Australia is playing England in a three-match ODI series. The first of which was played on Thursday (17 November). Australia captain Pat Cummins won the toss and decided to bowl first. The decision to bowl first augured well for Australia as they reduced England to 66/4 within the first 14 overs.

Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Marcus Stoinis struck for Australia. While the captain landed the first blow as Cummins dismissed Phil Salt in his second over, Mitchell Starc got rid of England’s second opener Jason Roy. And as Starc does usually, he cleaned Roy up with a beautiful inswinger. The left-arm quick produced an absolute screamer as he got the ball to swing big.

Coming from over the wicket, Starc pitched the ball on the good length and in the off-stump line. Roy went for a nudge towards midwicket but the ball was never there to be hit. It swung big and cut the batter into a half and eventually hit Roy’s off and middle stumps.

Malan rescues England

While Australian bowlers were on top in the early part of England’s inning, Dawid Malan took control in the latter half. The southpaw anchored the inning perfectly as he formed partnerships in patches. After England were four down, Malan and Buttler stitched a 52-run partnership for the fifth wicket. After Buttler fell, Malan and Liam Dawson took England's inning forward and added 40 runs together.

The southpaw then joined hands with Chris Jordan to add 41 more runs. After Jordan fell, Malan was joined by David Willey who scored 34* (40) and also added 60 runs for the eighth wicket with Malan who was eventually dismissed by Zampa after scoring 134 (128). Eventually, England finished with 287/9 as Willey stayed there till the end.
