The IPL 2023 fixture between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders was witness to a heated exchange as KKR captain Nitish Rana confronted the on-field umpires. Before the start of the last over, Rana was penalised by the officials as his bowlers were an over behind the required rate.

Hence the Kolkata Knight Riders were asked to bring in an extra fielder inside the ring as a penalty. Hence Rana wasn't happy with the call and was seen arguing with the umpires while his teammates tried to push away from the interaction. After this incident, Vaibhav Arora delivered a relatively quiet 20th over as he gave away nine runs and dismissed Ravindra Jadeja. CSK ended the first innings with a score of 144 runs while losing six wickets.

Talking about the KKR bowling, Varun Chakaravarthy once again emerged as the pick of the bowlers. The Karnataka star picked up two wickets while giving away 36 runs. Reacting to his spell and the team's first innings performance,  Chakaravarthy spoke about how he has been working on his variations that have helped him outfox batters throughout the 2023 season.

He said, "Good season for me, and the pitch was sticking with a bit of moisture. Became flat after the second powerplay. I’ve been working on my leg spin, good to see it went well. Last season, I used to bowl cross seam leg seam, so this time I’m mixing it up with cross seam and seam up, surely creating bigger doubts in the batters' minds."
