Petra Kvitova, the Czechia tennis player, who is a two-time Wimbledon champion, finally managed to win her first match on WTA Tour after giving birth to her first child, a baby boy named Petr in July 2024. The 35-year-old defeated Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu in the first round of the Italian Open in Rome in straight sets 7-5, 6-1, and following that, she talked about being very close to quitting tennis last year.
Notably, before her first win, Petra Kvitova had suffered four straight defeats on the WTA Tour following her return to the sport in February this year. She was away from tennis for 15 months during which her son Petr was born, and while announcing her comeback, the Czechia player was upbeat about the new chapter in her life, aiming to start afresh and take it from there.

I was 95% that I would never come back. I had enough of tennis at that time: Petra Kvitova
In her post match interview with the WTA website after the big win, Petra Kvitova sounded quite happy and a bit surprised about getting the job done in the first round of the Italian Open in Rome. She was quoted as saying, as per MSN, “It’s kind of weird that my first one came here. I've never played my best tennis here. But it feels much better than losing, that's for sure.”
“I was 95% that I would never come back. I had enough of tennis at that time. I was like, 'I can't do it any more' - so we decided to try for a baby. I didn't say anything because it wasn't 100%. When I could do something finally after pregnancy, I played some tennis and it felt so good. I was laughing. Every shot I hit smoothly, I was like, 'Wow - it's still there',” Petra Kvitova also added.
In the next round, Petra Kvitova will take on Ons Jabeur of Tunisia in the second round of the Italian Open in Rome in the women’s singles event.
