Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the women boxers who won medals at the World Boxing Championships last Wednesday. India won gold and two bronze medals at the recently concluded World Boxing championship. Nikhat Zareen became the fifth Indian boxer to win a gold medal at the Women's World Boxing Championships.
She joined the elite list of boxers including Mary Kom, Sarita Devi, Jenny RL and Lekha KC. Manisha Moun and debutant Parveen Hooda won the 57kg and 63kg bronze medals, respectively. A 12-member Indian contingent participated in the competition. While the medal haul has decreased by one, an Indian has been crowned world champion after four years.
Notably, India's best performance in the event remained in 2006 when the country clinched eight medals, including four gold, one silver and three bronze. India has won 39 medals, including ten gold, eight silver and 21 bronze in the Women's World Championships.
Responding to their meeting with Prime Minister, Manisha Moun expressed her delight on Twitter as she wrote, An absolute honour meeting our Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji. Thank you for your wishes and support." Meanwhile, Nikhat Zareen also wrote via her official Twitter handle, stating, "An honour to meet our Hon'ble PM @narendramodi sir. Thank you, sir."
Earlier, Nikhat Zareen received a warm welcome at Hyderabad Airport by Telangana ministers Srinivas Goud, Vemula Prashanth Reddy and Sports Authority of Telangana State (SATS) chairman A Venkateshwar Reddy. Speaking about her future goal, Zareen said that she aims for an Olympic medal at the Paris Olympics.
Earlier, Prime Minister congratulated the boxers saying their performance made India proud. "Our boxers have made us proud! Congratulations to Nikhat Zareen for a fantastic Gold medal win at the Women's World Boxing Championship. I also congratulate Manish Moun and Parveen Hooda for their Bronze medals in the same competitions," he wrote on Twitter after the emphatic win.
