Punam Raut

Despite there being various laws in the sport of cricket that govern more or less every aspect of the game, there are several grey areas in the game. One such dilemma is from the ethical point of view when a batter knows that he/she has edged one whether they should walk or wait for the umpire's decision.

Although the ethical call became further complicated with the advent of the Decision Review System (DRS) since it also brings in an additional facility to the opposition captain, what Punam Raut did on Friday has found both support and frowns from people of her own fraternity.

Notably, while Raut was in the middle of a resolute innings having faced over 160 balls and batting on 36 when she finally edged one to wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy, she walked off to the dressing room despite there being no DRS available in this match and the on-field umpire judging her not out.

It all happened in the 81st over of the India innings which was being bowled by Sophie Molineux. While the bowler lured Raut to play a block away from her body, it spun away and seemed to have taken a faint outside edge to the keeper, while the Australian players looked disappointed that the umpire did not give her out after an appeal, Raut had already started the walk back to the pavilion.

Check out the video of the incident here:

Earlier, Smriti Mandhana reached her maiden Test match hundred in the ongoing Test and became the first Indian woman to reach the three figures mark in the pink-ball Test format. Madhana, who reached her hundred off the 170th delivery of her innings, along with Shafali Verma put on 93 runs for the first wicket. Post which she added 102 runs with Raut before getting out to Ashleigh Gardner. Later Raut was dismissed after adding 22 runs along with captain Mithali Raj.

At the dinner break on Day 2, Raj along with Yastika Bhatia are unbeaten at the wicket batting on 15 and 2 respectively. India are playing this fixture without Harmanpreet Kaur who was ruled out due to a thumb injury.
