A rare incident took place during the Brazilian Serie A match between Santos FC and Bragantino on Monday as the Peixe defensive midfielder Sandry confused referee Paulo Cesar Zanovelli da Silva's whistle for a VAR check with a penalty kick signal and took the penalty, which was later disallowed.

Santos FC defeated Bragantino 2-0 at the Nabi Abi Chedid stadium as Guilherme Camacho opened the scoresheet for the visitors followed by Angelo Gabriel's 69th minute winner. Sandry was brought into the game at 77th minute replacing Ed Carlos. Santos right-back Madson fell into the box and won the penalty for his side in the injury time as Sandry stepped up to take the penalty kick.

Sandry waited for referee's whistle to take the penalty, however, Paulo Cesar decided to check with the VAR and blew whistle. Sandry took the penalty and scored at the right corner past goalkeeper Cleiton Schwengber but the referee disallowed the goal as he canceled the initial decision.
