While there are many things that the limited-overs format has given the sport of cricket, none perhaps is more significant to the game in contemporary times than superb fielding skills as well as shot-making. Some of the finest of these are on display currently in the ongoing Big Bash League competition.
A superb piece of fielding and a catch that would surely be considered for the best in the tournament award was witnessed in the ongoing match between the Sydney Sixers and the Brisbane Heat at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). It happened during the Heat innings. While the batting team had not got off to a good start, setting up a total and had already lost two wickets in the first two overs, the catch by Sixers' Sean Abbott well and truly tilted the balance of the match in the fielding team's favour.
It happened in the second ball of the fourth over being bowled by Ben Dwarshuis. While the batter Lynn had seemingly smashed a back-foot punch towards the cover region, out of nowhere, Abbott dived to his right and picked up a one-handed stunner to see the back of Lynn.
Even the official social media handle of the tournament shared a video of the catch.
"Unbelieeeeevable catch!! Sean Abbott with one of the best you'll see #BBL11," the clip was captioned.
Here is the catch:
Heat could not really recover from the early breakthrough and could only muster 105 before getting bowled out in 19.1 overs. Apart from taking the superb catch to get rid of Lynn, Abbott also emerged as the pick of the bowlers in the innings, scalping 4 wickets for 31 runs. In addition, Ben Dwarshuis and Hayden Kerr picked two wickets each. Dan Christian also got a wicket.
From here, it seems to be a walk in the park for the Sixers team who are in-form and are currently sitting at second place in the points table with 18 points from 6 matches. They have already won 5 of their six matches, in contrast to Heat who are at the sixth position in the eight-team table and have 9 points from 6 matches.
