The Spanish defender Sergio Ramos got a straight red on VAR check at the Anoeta Stadium during the 2-1 loss for Sevilla against Real Sociedad in La Liga on Sunday, November 26. With this sending-off, the 37-year-old extended his record of being the most red-carded player in the history of La Liga with 21.

Sergio Ramos was initially booked in the 82nd minute before he received a second yellow card for a high tackle on Real Sociedad winger Brais Mendez in the 88th minute. The decision was reviewed on VAR which led to the referee viewing his pitchside monitor, to change the second yellow card to a straight red for the former FIFA World Cup winner.

Then, in a surprising turn of events, Jesus Navas, the teammate of Sergio Ramos, who was protesting against the decision of the referee, received a straight red for the first time in La Liga to reduce Sevilla to 9-men with a game to chase at the Anoeta Stadium. At the very end, the goal for Youssef En-Nesyri for Sevilla in the second half wasn’t enough as Real Sociedad earned the victory, thanks to Umar Sadiq’s goal early in the first half after the good fortune of an own goal from Marko Dmitrovic.
In the 21st century, Sergio Ramos has been red-carded more than any other player in football, while Rafael Marquez and Felipe Melo behind him, have received 21 and 20 sending-offs, respectively. Notably, the 37-year-old has had 29 red card offences in his footballing career.
