Indian captain Sunil Chhetri continued his incredible scoring form in the SAFF Championship 2023 as scored a stunning volley, moments before half-time against Kuwait. After a hard-fought first half was nearing a goalless end when the Blue Tigers received a corner in the 47th minute.
Anirudh Thapa, the designated corner-kick taker, launched a deep towards the far post, where an open Chhetri took the ball on the full and slotted in stunning a finish into the bottom corner to give India a 1-0 lead. This was Sunil Chhetri's fifth goal in the SAFF championship and 92nd in his career.

But unfortunately for Chhetri, the match didn't end in India's favour as Kuwait managed to find a later equaliser off Anwar Ali's own goal. Reacting to draw, Sunil Chhetri said, "It's not Anwar, it's the country who conceded. It's an own goal. It can happen to anyone. We're all professional enough to not talk about it."
"I hope the kid shrugs it off. We have his back. Don't take technical mistakes seriously. We work on effort. I've missed silly goals I shouldn't have missed. Someone might make a silly challenge and we'll get a penalty. It happens in football. India conceded the goal, not Anwar. "
