On April 23, Kolkata Knight Riders faced off against Chennai Super Kings at home in the match 33 of Indian Premier League 2023. CSK went on to defeat KKR by 49 runs to secure their fifth win of the tournament and move to the top of the IPL points table.

During this match, Eden Gardens in Kolkata was bathed in the sea of yellow in support of MS Dhoni, the Chennai Super Kings captain and one of the most heralded figures in Indian cricket. When he walked out to bat in the final over of the CSK innings, the chants of ‘Dhoni Dhoni’ echoed in the stadium.

As MSD took strike, the camera panned at the KKR dugout where Venkatesh Iyer was seen vibing to Dhoni chants alongside the crowd. The skipper of Chennai franchise ended up playing 3 deliveries in the innings and got 2 runs out of it.

With that, Chennai Super Kings’ innings finished at a mammoth total of 235/4 in their 20 overs against Kolkata Knight Riders. Three batters got fifties for CSK, including Ajinkya Rahane, who top scored with 71(29), a fiery innings laced with 6 fours and 5 sixes. Devon Conway got 56 off 40 deliveries with 4 fours and 3 sixes, while Shivam Dube, his fellow left-handed teammate, put together 50 off 21 balls with 2 fours and 5 sixes.

In their bowling innings, CSK started superbly as their two opening bowlers, namely Akash Singh and Tushar Deshpande, picked up the KKR openers in the first two overs. Jason Roy scored an enterprising 61(26) with 5 fours and 5 sixes, while Rinku Singh got 53 off 33 deliveries with 3 fours and 4 sixes in the middle order, but these runs were far from enough for Kolkata.

It was the spinners of Chennai Super Kings, including Theekshana and Jadeja, who got into the game to restrict Kolkata Knight Riders to 186/8 and hand their team a comfortable win at the Eden Gardens on a Sunday night.
