There are many times football proves that it is more than a sport a means of togetherness and community. This specific sentiment was showcased by the Danish club Viborg FF as they paid tribute to their former player and Lyngby midfielder Marcel Romer’s wife Cecilie who unexpectedly passed away in March.
Viborg fans and players gave Romer a warm welcome after he faced them and serenaded him with a standing ovation. The 30-year-old was in tears and got extremely emotional and was helped by the Viborg FF players as he walked back.
Marcel Romer posted a message for Viborg FF fans and thanked them for their support over the last six months. The post said, “Viborg. A huge and important chapter in mine and my family’s life. A city that has always had a very special place in our hearts. A place that hasn’t gotten any smaller. Thank you for all the support we received in the past six months. Thank you - just thank you.”

Rømer lost his wife in February 2022 and hence the midfielder penned a heartfelt note for her and thanked her for everything she did for him and his family. He wrote, “28 February, the love of my life tragically passed away thank you for all the love that has already been sent our way - and just as much thank you for the love that continues to be sent. Sille my heart is broken. This should never have happened. You don't deserve this Right now, I'm thinking about all the dreams and goals we had as a couple and as a family that we never reached. It hurts to think about.”
