During the Australian Tour Down Under Classic men’s sprint cycling race on the streets of Adelaide in the state of South Australia, a high-speed accident involving multiple cyclists led to a women spectator getting seriously injured. In the immediate aftermath, the woman spectator was taken to the hospital, and sometime later, the Premier of South Australia, Peter Malinauskas, took cognizance of the matter, calling it an “awful, freak accident.”

The video footage of the accident, which was shared on social media by 7News, shows a group of cyclists, including Manlio Moro from the Movistar Team, had a collision with the barricades on the final corner of the Australian Tour Down Under Classic men’s sprint cycling race. One of the cyclists was inadvertently launched over the top of the barricade, into the pile of spectators standing on the other side, which led to many of them going down as well.

Female spectator suffered injuries and was taken to hospital: Race organisers

The official statement from the organisers of the Australian Tour Down Under Classic men’s sprint cycling race read, “Sadly, as a result of the collision, a female spectator suffered injuries and was taken to hospital, where she is currently being treated.” In his statement to the local media, Peter Malinauskas shared information about the women spectator suffering multiple serious injuries, while saying, “Tragically last night we did see a significant accident occur at the TDU, where cyclists went into spectators.”

Moreover, the first win of the 2025 season at the Australian Tour Down Under Classic men’s sprint cycling race for Sam Welsford of the Red Bull-Bora-Hangsrohe was completely overshadowed by the accident, which he himself called as ‘super-fast.” Meanwhile, Henri Uhlig of the Alpecin-Deceuninck finished in second place, while Matthew Brennan of Visma-Lease A Bike secured a third place on the podium.
