On Day 5 of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, India secured a couple of medals to jump to 14th place in the medal tally. While Indian javelin thrower, Sumit Antil broke his previous record to defend his Paralympic Games gold medal, he also broke the world record twice during his campaign. Moreover, the Indian shuttlers continued their medal galore with Nitesh Kumar winning a gold, while Suhas continued his silver medal run at the Games.

Sumit Antil defends gold medal in men’s javelin throw F64 with 70.59m throw; sets new Paralympics record

Sumit Antil defended his gold medal in the Men’s Javelin Throw F64 category at Paris Paralympics with a throw of 70.59m, bettering his own Paralympic Games record, at the Stade de France in Paris on Monday. Sumit began with a throw of 69.11m to break his own Paralympic Games record of 68.55m from Tokyo 2020. He bettered the mark again with an attempt of 70.59m in the next round. The two other Indians in the field, Sandeep (62.80m) and Sandip Sanjay Sargar (58.03m), finished fourth and seventh, respectively.

Yogesh Kathuniya wins silver medal at Paris Paralympics 2024

On Monday, September 2, Yogesh Kathuniya won a silver medal in the men’s discus throw F56 event at the Paris Paralympic Games 2024. In front of thousands of fans in attendance inside the Stade de France, the Indian athlete registered his season’s best throw of 42.22m, to get onto the podium in the Paralympics once again in his career.

Nitesh Kumar clinches gold in men’s singles SL3 at Paralympics'24

Indian shuttler Nitesh Kumar clinched gold medal in the men’s singles SL3 event at the Paris Paralympics 2024. Kumar, who appeared in his first Paralympics, took down his counterpart, Great Britain’s Daniel Bethell with a scoreline of 21-14, 18-21, 23-21 in a 79-minute long contest. With his gold, India's medal count has reached nine, including 2 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze.

Murugesan, Manisha Ramadass bag silver and bronze in women’s SU5

Thulasimathi Murugesan created history by becoming the first ever Indian female shuttler to clinch a silver medal in the history of Paralympics. The Indian shuttler lost to China’s Qiu Xia Yang in the final of women’s singles SU5 gold medal match in the 2024 Paris edition of Paralympics to win silver. On the other hand, Manisha Ramadass took down Catherine Rosengreg in the bronze medal match. 

Suhas Yathiraj settles for silver medal at Paris Paralympics 2024

On Monday, September 2, Indian para shuttler Suhas Yathiraj had to settle for silver medal in the men’s singles badminton SL4 event after losing the final to Lucas Mazur of France at the Paris Paralympics 2024. At the La Chapelle Arena Court 1, Suhas Yathiraj was no match to the Frenchman, who defeated him in straight games 9-21, 13-21.

Sivarajan-Nithya Sre duo loses Mixed Doubles SH6 bronze medal match in Paris

The Indian shuttler pair of Sivarajan Solaimalai/Nithya Sre Sumathy lost in the Mixed Doubles SH6 bronze medal match to Indonesia’s Subhan/Rina Marlina 0-2 (17-21, 12-21) at the La Chapelle Arena Court 3 on Monday. The bronze medal match ended just under the 30-minute mark as this loss turned into India’s second fourth-placed finish at the ongoing Paris Paralympics.

Sheetal Devi, Rakesh Kumar win bronze medal at Paris Paralympics

On Monday, September 2, Indian pairing of Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar won a bronze medal in the mixed team compound archery event at the Paris Paralympics 2024 after defeating Eleonora Sarti and Matteo Bonacina. In a tense bronze medal match at the Les Invalides, the Indians managed to take home the glory with a scoreline of 156-155.

Italian Valentina Petrillo becomes first transgender athlete to compete at Paris Paralympic Games

Italy’s Valentina Petrillo created history after she became the first openly transgender athlete to compete in Paralympics history when she took to the track in Paris on Monday. Petrillo, 50, finished second in her heat of the T12 400 metres, a category for visually impaired athletes, in a time of 58.35 seconds and qualified for the semifinals later on Monday, September 2. Petrillo suffers from Stargardt disease, a genetic retinal condition which leads to progressive loss of vision. Unlike her opponents in the race, she competed without a guide runner.
