Jyothi Yarraji breaks personal record at World University Games

India’s star athlete Jyothi Yarraji achieved a historical mark at the World University Games in Chengdu. Yarraji, broke her own record in the 100m hurdles and won the bronze medal by clocking a time of 12.78 seconds. Earlier, her best recorded time was 12.82 seconds that she set in October 2022. 

Not only this, but it was India’s first ever 100m hurdles at the World University Games. Slovakia’s Viktoria Forster won the gold medal by clocking a time of 12.72 seconds, whereas China’s Yanni Wu won the silver medal with a time of 12.76 seconds.

Aditi Ashok narrowly makes it to next rounds of Women’s Scottish Open golf tournament

In Golf, it was Aditi Ashok who made it to the headlines as she narrowly made it to the cut line at the end of the second round of the FREED Group Women’s Scottish Open golf tournament. Aditi scored three-over 147, with being at T-65, and managed to survive the cut, despite two late bogeys, making it to the weekend's rounds.

Norway’s journey comes to end in FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023

Norway’s curvy journey in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 came to an end after their 3-1 loss to Japan in the last 16 that took place on Saturday, August 5. With this defeat, Norway’s coach Hege Riise’s future remains uncertain as it was her side’s third poor show in four tournaments. 

After the loss, Riise said, “We knew Japan would have a lot of possession and we had to be strong in defence to not allow them to play too much into us. But they did well, we played solid defence at times but not quite good enough.”

India advances to third round of Hero Asian Champions Trophy Chennai 2023

Indian men’s hockey team sailed into the third round of group-stage round of Hero Asian Champions Trophy Chennai 2023. In the next round, the team will lock horns with Malaysia on Sunday, August 5, Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium in Egmore. 

The hosts won the winning game against China 7-2 and settled for a 1-1 draw against Japan in the second match played on August 4, Friday. With this win, India now sits at the second spot of the standings, and before the upcoming game against the table toppers, Malaysia, India captain Harmanpreet Singh said that the team knows what to do in the next game. Singh said, “We know what we need to do in our next game against Malaysia. Our focus is on capitalising on the areas that led to our successful goals in the opening game against China. Additionally, we're eager to try something new in our upcoming match."

Indian women’s compound archery team scripts history by winning gold at World Archery Championship

The Indian women’s compound archery team scripted history as they clinched India’s first ever gold at the World Archery Championship in Berlin. The winning team comprises Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Parneet Kaur, and Aditi Gopichand Swami. 

In the final round, the Indian archers put up a brilliant display of skills against the World Number 1. Mexico. The Indian trio scored 235-229 against Mexico’s Dafne Quintero, Ana Sofia Hernandez Jeon, and Andrea Becerra. 

Badminton

HS Prannoy takes down compatriot Priyanshu Rajawat to sail into Australian Open 2023 final

Indian ace shuttler HS Prannoy sailed into the final of Australian Open 2023 final. The World Number 9 men’s singles shuttler took down compatriot Priyanshu Rajawat 21-18, 21-12 in the semifinal round. In the final clash, Prannoy will lock horns with World No. 24, China’s Weng Hongyang.

World Number 34, Rajawat, started the game on the dominant side and took the score to 2-0. However, the 31-year-old soon took the game under his control and emerged victorious with two straight games wins.
