Indian weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga created a Commonwealth Games 2022 snatch record with his 140kg lift and won the gold in the 67kg men’s category. He became the fifth Indian weightlifter to bag a medal in Birmingham.
Lalrinnunga hails from Aizawl, Mizoram where he was born on 26 October 2002. His father Lalneihtluanga Ralte was a famous face in the Boxing Circuit of Mizoram in the early 90s. Jeremy comes from a humble background as his family situation for a long time didn't allow him to live his dreams. In an effort to support his family, he started working as a labourer on contract with the local Power Works Department (PWD).
Like his father, Lalrinnunga started boxing before taking up weightlifting. He then created history as he became the first Indian to win a Youth Olympics gold in the men's 62kg category in 2018. Jeremy was part of the Army's Boys Sports Company where he bagged several medals before taking part in an international event (age group). He also won the National Championship in Kolkata in 2020.
