The Commonwealth Games 2022 is scheduled to take place from July 28 to August 8 in Birmingham, England. In the build-up to that event, Indian boxer Nikhat Zareen has had a sublime year as she went on to win the world championship title in Istanbul.

The 26-year-old boxer from Telangana started the year 2022 by winning the gold at Strandja Memorial in Bulgaria in February. Following her powerful performance in Bulgaria, she was included in the Indian division for the world championships and the now-postponed Asian Games. Later on May 20, Nikhat became the fifth Indian woman to win gold at the boxing world championships.

Earlier, Nikhat Zareen made the headlines for challenging established boxer Mary Kom only to lose the bout fair and square. With the loss, her chance to compete at the Tokyo Olympics also went in vain. Nikhat, later, became the only boxer other than Mary Kom to win the women's world championship after 16 years.

After competing in the 52kg category, Zareen now moves to the 50kg category for the Birmingham Games 2022. "This time, I’m playing in the 50kg category and it will be a new experience for me to play in this category. Now onwards, I have to play in the 50kg category and it will be a new experience for me to play in this category," said the Istanbul gold medalist.
