For the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2023, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) picked a 15-man strong Indian squad last month. Rohit Sharma was given the job to captain Team India in the Test format, but the lineup had a glaring miss, the position of vice-captain. BCCI hadn’t named a deputy to the 36-year-old, who will lead India against Australia, in the summit clash of Test cricket at The Oval in London from June 7 onwards.

The last time the Indian cricket team had no vice-captain, happened during the third and fourth Test against Australia during the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) in February of this year. KL Rahul was removed from the position of Rohit Sharma’s deputy by BCCI, owing to his poor performances in the first two Tests of the series.

During the same time, the Indian Express had reported that the captain of Team India, Rohit Sharma was given the power to choose his deputy on the field. "It was decided not to name any vice-captain. Instead, the power was given to Rohit Sharma. Who will lead the side in case he has to leave the field is Rohit Sharma's call," a source was quoted as saying by the news agency.

Now, it is expected that Rohit Sharma will be allowed to pick a vice-captain in case he needs some assistance to lead the side during the WTC final against Australia at The Oval in London, just like the last series at home. Some of the names who could become temporary vice-captains for Team India for the upcoming Test match are Cheteshwar Pujara and Ravichandran Ashwin. On the other hand, the Mumbai-born cricketer might ask former Indian captains Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane to take over the proceedings on the field during the all-important fixture.
