Conor Gallagher, the English midfielder, joined Atletico Madrid from Chelsea in a deal reportedly worth £34 million last summer after taking his game to the next level in the season prior. The 25-year-old, who is a Chelsea academy graduate, played 50 matches for Atletico Madrid last season, scoring four goals and providing six assists under Diego Simeone’s reign as manager, impressing the fans in Madrid and elsewhere.
But, in a big development, Atletico Madrid could be forced to sell Conor Gallagher since they have breached the La Liga rule of signing non-European Union (EU) players in their squad for the competition. The limit of signing non-EU players has been three in La Liga for decades, but with their recent signing of Thiago Almada from Argentina, Atletico Madrid have exceeded it, which means that they won’t be able to register one of these players for next season.
Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United interested in signing Conor Gallagher: Reports
As per the report from Cope in Spain, Diego Simeone is interested in keeping Nahuel Molina at Atletico Madrid, while Samuel Lino isn’t expected to leave the club despite having lesser status than Conor Gallagher, with the latter having the La Liga rule applied on him since the implementation of Brexit. Furthermore, there is interest in the English international from the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United in the Premier League already.
Although Conor Gallagher would like to keep on playing club football in Spain, he is believed to be open to a return to England in the Premier League if Atletico Madrid do decide to not keep him. Regardless, there is a lot of value in the English midfielder wherever he ends up playing club football next season with the prime years of his career fast approaching.
