On Thursday, May 8, the match 58th of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC) has been abruptly called off due to the malfunctioning of one of the floodlight towers, which happened due to power outage in the area. Shortly prior, the match was interrupted when three of the four floodlight towers suddenly stopped working at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamshala.
For the unversed, it was Shreyas Iyer, the captain of PBKS, who won the toss and decided to bat first against DC at their home stadium. The opening batters of Punjab, namely Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh, who have been one of the best pairings in the IPL 2025 season, took the DC bowlers to the cleaners in the power play, scoring 69 runs before continuing the momentum against the spinners.
These two batters ended up sharing a 122-run stand for the first wicket before T Natarajan picked up his first wicket of the tournament, dismissing Priyansh Arya for 70 runs in 34 balls with five fours and six sixes. Just when PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer joined Prabhsimran Singh in the middle, with the latter batting on 50 not out in 28 balls with seven fours, the floodlights in the stadium suddenly went out.
PBKS and DC players were takne team hotel in Dharamshala before they left for Delhi
After the players went off the field due to floodlight issue, the news filtered via BCCI that the match had been called off due to a significant technical failure at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala. The statement from the BCCI also stated they regretted the inconvenience caused to the fans, who were present in the stadium after paying their hard earned money to watch the match.
Shortly after the match was abandoned, the players and support staff of PBKS and DC were taken to the team hotel before they reportedly left for Delhi, to reach the venue of their next match in the IPL 2025.
