The World Athletics Champions 2023 kick started on August 19 in Budapest, Hungary. The Day 1 of the World Athletics Championships saw a total of nine Indian athletes in action, including the likes of Commonwealth Games silver medallist Avinsh Sable and gold medallist Eldhose Paul.
While the Day 1 of the event saw a two-hour delay with thunderstorms pouring in, it wasn’t the day for the Indian athletes. The Indian trio of Akashdeep Singh, Vikash Singh and Paramjeet Singh struggled as Vikash finished at 28 th place with a timing of 1:21:58s, followed by Paramjeet taking the 35 th place with a timing of 1:24:02s. Akashdeep finished 47 th with a timing of 1:31:12s.
In another event, Avinash Sable started in fine fashion but failed to make the cut as he finished seventh in 3000m Men’s steeplechase final. Shaili Singh also failed to make the cut in Women’s Long Jump as she finished 24 th out of 36 athletes. India’s Ajay Kumar also ended at 13 th place in the Heat 3.
Talking about the men’s triple jump, the contention there also came to an end on Day 1 of the World Athletics Championships. Abdulla Aboobacker finished 14 th with a final jump of 16.60m, whereas Eldhose Paul saw himself land in 15m range, with the best coming on his first attempt (15.59m).
Ryan Courser retains shot put title
America’s Ryan Courser retained his shot put world title with a throw of 23.51m in the World Athletics Championships. The 30-year-old, who has been a two-time Olympic champion and holds a world record and set championships record with a throw of 23.51m in his second round.
On the other hand, the United States set a world record in the 4x400 mixed relay on Day 1 of the World Athletics Championships. They improved their own record to 3:08.80.
