On Saturday, November 30, in the Game 5 of the World Chess Championship 2024 match, Indian GM Dommaraju Gukesh, the challenger, had a massive blunder, but world champion GM Ding Liren from China, couldn’t capitalise on the situation. After somehow managing to earn a draw with the white pieces, Dommaraju Gukesh is still level on points (2.5-2.5) with Ding Liren in the title match, which has nine more games to go in the next couple of weeks in Singapore.
The Game 5 of the World Chess Championship 2024 match saw Dommaraju Gukesh employ the quiet Exchange French before opting for a risky G4 push, which led to a blunder from him. Ding Liren took control of the game from that point onwards, and looked poised to go for a win without risking anything, but ultimately, he wasn’t able to drive home the advantage, allowing the challenger to secure a 40-move draw.
Considering I was trailing after the first game, nice to be here: Dommaraju Gukesh
Following a edge of seat draw in Game 5 of the World Chess Championship 2024 match, Indian GM Dommaraju Gukesh once again spoke about how the title fight still has a long way to go against an ever-improving world champion Ding Liren. He was quoted as saying, as per FirstPost, “Still too early. Considering I was trailing after the first game, nice to be here. Lot more important games to come. We’re not even halfway there.”
Meanwhile, Ding Liren wasn’t happy about not being able to convert his chance after Dommaraju Gukesh had blundered in the middle of the game apart from talking about how isn’t currently in the lead in the World Chess Championship 2024 match. He said, “Not ideal. Had chances in some games. Lead by a point, even today, I had some advantage that I didn’t realise. Something to improve in the next round.”
