Zimbabwe is confirmed to host the Sri Lankan cricket team for a limited overs series wherein both the teams will contest in two One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and three T20 Internationals (T20Is). The series will begin on August 29, 2025, with the first ODI at the Harare Sports Club, which is going to host all the five games to be played, while the final match, the third T20I is scheduled for September 7, 2025.
This series is going to be a part of a busy period for Zimbabwe Cricket as they will be playing ICC World Test Champions South Africa in two Tests in Bulawayo next week. After that they will also face the Proteas and New Zealand in the T20I tri-series begining on July 14 and finally face Kiwis in two Tests from August 3.
Matches between our two nations have always produced entertaining cricket: Zimbavwe Cricket's managing director
In his statement Zimbabwe Cricket’s Managing Director Givemore Makoni expressed his excitement to confirm the visit of the Sri Lankan Cricket Team. Makoni said, “We expect this series to be a thrilling and competitive contest between the two sides.” He further added, “Matches between our two nations have always produced entertaining cricket and this tour comes at a crucial time for our team as we prepare for the upcoming T20 World Cup qualifying campaign.”
These fixtures particularly the three T20Is will be of much importance to Zimbabwe as it precedes the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Regional Final. The tournament will be hosted in Zimbabwe from September 19 to October 4, 2025. Zimbabwe could not make it to the last edition of the T20 World Cup but played at the 2022 edition. They are also set to host Afghanistan for an all-format tour later this year. The hosts are seeing this series as a preparation for that tournament which can prove to be a chance for them to confirm their berth for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, which will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
The last time the two nations squared off against each other was in 2024, when Sri Lanka reigned victorious 2-0 in the three match ODI series at home. Sri Lanka have not played a bilateral series in Zimbabwe since 2016. They were last in Zimbabwe in 2023, for the ODI World Cup Qualifiers. Currently, Sri Lanka as part of their first assignment of the ongoing World Test Championship cycle at home is hosting Bangladesh for an all-format tour which includes two games of the red-ball format, and five games of the white-ball format (three ODIs and three T20Is).
