  • Head was named the Player of the Match.

Travis Head had a Test match to remember, the first one of the Ashes summer 2021-22, as he played a key role in his team’s win over England and even bagged the Player of the Match award. The southpaw came out to bat at a time where England would have still fancied their chances of restricting Australia to as low a total as possible after getting bowled out for 147 in the first innings themselves.

However, Head had other ideas as he took the attack to the opposition, scoring 152 runs off 148 deliveries with the help of 14 boundaries and four sixes. Thanks to this innings, the Aussies scored a brilliant 425 in the first innings, dwarfing England’s first innings total.

However, during his innings, Head was caught swearing on the stump mic while batting. While on 86, the left-handed batter tried to play a pull shot with all his might but missed. And it was here that he got emotional as he uttered “Oh you c***.” The incident largely went unnoticed- whether consciously or unconsciously is a different debate- by the commentators on air.

However, nothing misses the scrutiny of the fans and thus a video of the incident has surfaced on the internet.

After putting 425 runs on the board and taking a massive lead, Australia came up against a resilient Joe Root and Dawid Malan, who at one stage brought them to a position from where all four results looked possible. However, the brittleness in the English lineup was exposed once again and they were bowled out for 297 in the second innings after being 220/2 at stumps on Day 3.

“The staff and Pat, JL, were fantastic with their communication, gave me real clarity. Great to get the nod, was a fantastic week and a great starting point for us. A lot of credit to Davey and Marnus’ partnership, they set me up to take my opportunity. Learnt a lot from the way Jos Buttler played,” Head said at the post-match presentation where he was named the Player of the Match.

“Was a tough wicket in stages. I rode my luck and took my opportunities, nice to contribute. [Celebration] Rode the wave of emotion with the crowd, and Starcy, loved every minute of it,” he added.
