A legend of Indian Tennis, Vijay Amritraj has given advice to the upcoming Indian tennis players saying that the upcoming players should prioritize singles over doubles. He also said that the ultimate goal should be to break into the world’s top 50, compete regularly in Grand Slams and win ATP titles rather than merely participate on the tour.

The former world No. 16 also said that young players must aspire to emulate the achievements of great singles champions such as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams. He mentioned that success in tennis is ultimately measured by rankings, titles and performances at the sport’s biggest events. Watch the video here

Speaking to PTI, Vijay Amritraj said “You don’t pick up a tennis racquet dreaming of becoming the world’s best doubles player. You dream of being the next Federer, Nadal or Serena. The benchmark for Indian tennis must be simple: players consistently competing in Grand Slams and breaking into the top 100, top 50 and top 20."

No Indian players in Senior Singles Wimbledon

India will not have any player in the Singles main draw at the upcoming Wimbledon Championship. The official Wimbledon entry list has Indians only in the doubles and no player has been able to get into the singles competition.

India’s highest ranked singles player, Sumit Nagal could not make it to the Wimbledon qualifying draw after losing in Roehampton. In the French Open 2026 slam no singles player from India made it to the main draw. The recent decline has been a frustration for the tennis federation.
