Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised to have ice cream with ace shuttler PV Sindhu once she returns from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in August. He made this announcement during a virtual interaction with Tokyo-bound Indian athletes on Tuesday.

Notably, Sindhu had disclosed in a recent interview that her coach Pullela Gopichand took away her mobile phone and even banned her from having ice cream during the 2016 Rio Olympics. However, she wouldn't mind all the sacrifices as she became the first badminton player from India to win a silver medal at the Olympic Games.

I am confident that you will be successful once again: PM Modi

Taking note of her revelation, Modi promised to have ice cream with her after she returns from the marquee event in Tokyo.

"Sindhu Ji your parents have made a lot of sacrifices to help you reach where you are at the moment. They have done their job, now it is your turn to show what you are made of," he said during the interaction.

"Work hard and I am confident that you will be successful once again. And when you all come back from the Olympics, I will have ice cream with you," he added.

Have to control my diet: Sindhu

Meanwhile, Sindhu, who remains the only badminton player to secure a place in the Olympics, outlined the importance of a proper diet in an athlete's life before telling the PM that she does have ice cream sometimes.

"I have to control my diet because diet is very important for an athlete. Now that the Olympics are coming up, I have to control my diet so that's why I cannot eat a lot of ice cream, only sometimes," she said.
