Prime Minister Narendra Modi will interact with the Indian contingent bound for the Commonwealth Games 2022 on July 20 via video conferencing, the PMO confirmed on Monday. According to the press release, athletes, as well as coaches will also attend the interaction.
The interaction is part of the continuous effort of the Prime Minister to motivate athletes ahead of their participation in major sporting events. Last year, Prime Minister Modi interacted with the Indian contingent for the Tokyo Olympics, as well as the para-athletes who participated in the Paralympic Games.
PMO further informed that Prime Minister takes a keen interest in the progress of athletes and spoke to congratulate them on their success and sincere efforts while motivating them to do better.
“On many occasions, he personally rang up athletes to congratulate them on their landmark achievements. Further, also upon their return to the country, the Prime Minister has also met and interacted with the contingent,” read the statement.
According to a report published in TOI, the Sports Authority of India’s Target Olympic Podium Scheme division has sent out emails to the CWG-bound athletes, conveying to them the proposed interaction and to keep themselves available for a ‘dry run’ ahead of the final interaction. Several members of the squad have already reached Birmingham over the past few days, depending on their training schedule as worked out by their coaches.
The report further claimed that sports secretary Sujata Chaturvedi would personally be interacting with the CWG-bound sportspersons in batches. Olympic medallists Neeraj Chopra, PV Sindhu, Mirabai Chanu, Lovlina Borgohian, Bajrang Punia, and Ravi Kumar Dahiya are all part of the Indian contingent for the Birmingham games. The CWG 2022 is scheduled to commence on July 28 and culminate on August 8. A total of 215 athletes, participating in 141 events across 19 sporting disciplines, will represent India in the mega sporting event.
