The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) does not allow any politician to take any position in the Indian cricket board and that is the reason Rajeev Shukla will have to step down from his post of Vice President. As per reports, Shukla who took oath as a Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) on Monday, will be making the announcement about the same on July 21.

Rajeev Shukla took an oath as a Rajya Sabha MP on Monday along with 28 other MPs, including former cricketer Harbhajan Singh. He will now serve in the Upper House for six years. But he can’t resume working as the Vice-President of the Indian Cricket board, considering the BCCI Constitution does not permit this. A BCCI official also confirmed that Shukla will make the announcement of his stepping down in the coming days.

“As per the constitution, Shukla ji has to step down. We haven’t had a chance to discuss this as most of the office bearers were in England. Shukla ji was also busy with his Rajya Sabha commitments. We will have a chance to discuss this at the Apex Council meeting. But can’t say when he will make the announcement,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport. The BCCI’s Apex Council meeting is due to take place on Thursday (21 July) in Mumbai.

Notably, the BCCI constitution barres a politician to hold office in the Apex cricketing body. “A person shall be disqualified from being an Office-Bearer, a member of the Governing Council or any committee or any similar organization if he or she… is a Minister or Government Servant or holds a public office,” states BCCI Constitution.

Rajeev Shukla took over as the Vice President of BCCI in December 2020, when he was elected for the post unopposed. The Indian cricket board is currently headed by Sourav Ganguly (President), while Jay Shah is the current Secretary.
