Former India opener Virender Sehwag has come up with the idea to relieve Rohit Sharma from T20I captaincy. Sehwag said that this will help Sharma manage the workload and rejuvenate himself to lead in Tests and ODIs. Notably, Sharma has not been able to feature in all T20Is since being named as the captain of the side due to workload management.

Virender Sehwag said that if the management has someone else’s name in their mind for T20I captaincy, they can relieve Sharma from leadership duties in the shortest format. The former opener also pointed out how this will help Sharma manage his workload and focus on the other two formats.

“If the Indian team management has someone else in mind as captain in the T20 format, then I think, Rohit (Sharma) could be relieved and the following can be taken into consideration going forward," Virender Sehwag told PTI in an interview.

"One, that would allow Rohit to manage his workload and mental fatigue, given his age. Two, once someone new is appointed as captain in T20s, it would also allow Rohit to take breaks and rejuvenate himself to lead India in both Tests and ODIs," he said in an interaction arranged by Sony Sports, the official broadcaster of the India-England series.

If management wants one captain for all formats, Sharma is best choice: Sehwag

The 43-year-old did speak about split captaincy but also cleared his stand on who should be the captain if BCCI wants only one captain for all three formats. Virender Sehwag said that Rohit Sharma is the best choice at the moment if the management is shying away from trying split captaincy.

"If the Indian think-tank still wants to pursue with the same policy, which is, to let one man leading India in all the three formats, then I still believe, Rohit Sharma is the best man for it,” said the former India cricketer.
