On Wednesday (20 July), the ace tennis stars Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic were included in the entry list for US Open 2022. The Tournament is slated to take place from August 29 to September 11 at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam champion crashed out of the first round in Wimbledon 2022. On the flip side, Djokovic won his 21st Grand Slam title by beating Nick Kyrgios in the Wimbledon Final.

However, there is no guarantee of the Serbian national featuring in the Tournament, due to his stance on the COVID-19 vaccination. As per the current US Vaccine Laws, every foreigner must get themselves vaccinated ahead of their entry to the country. The organizers of the US Open have also released a statement regarding the same development.

“Per the ITF Grand Slam rulebook, all eligible players are automatically entered into the men’s and women’s singles main-draw fields based on ranking 42 days prior to the first Monday of the event,” US Open said in a statement released.

“The US Open does not have a vaccination mandate in place for players, but it will respect the US government’s position regarding travel into the country for unvaccinated non-US citizens,” the statement added.

Interestingly, almost 12,000 people have signed a petition on, demanding the United States Tennis Association (USTA) and the US government to allow Novak Djokovic to take part in the coveted Tournament.

“There is absolutely no reason at this stage of the pandemic to not allow Djokovic to play at the U.S. Open 2022,” said the petition, which was launched on June 21.”(The) US Government and USTA must work together to allow him to play … MAKE IT HAPPEN, USTA!”

What is Djokovic’s stance on COVID vaccination?

In February this year, the 35-year-old had already prepared himself for missing major Tournaments, rather than taking a vaccine shot. He secured Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon titles in 2021. However, he failed to compete in the 2022 edition of the Australian Open, due to his non-vaccination status.

“I’m not vaccinated and I’m not planning to get vaccinated, so the only good news I can have is them removing the mandated green vaccine card or whatever you call it to enter the United States or exemption,” Djokovic had said after winning Wimbledon 2022.

“I don’t think an exemption is realistically possible. I’ll wait for some good news from the US because I would really love to go there.”
