Preview

After facing defeat in the 1st ODI, India will be gutted to take the field and level the series. Meanwhile, South Africa will just look to repeat their performance from the last game. Temba Bavuma and Co. outclassed India to take the game home by 31 runs. The captain led from the front and scored a century. Rassie van der Dussen played his part to perfection. The stylish batter scored an unbeaten 129, his highest score in ODIs. On the other hand, India succumbed yet again to middle-order inexperience. The visitors will hope to rectify the mistakes from the 1st ODI and win the game to stay alive in the series. The venue for the second ODI will be the same i.e. Boland Park, Paarl.

Head-to-Head

Pitch Report

The Boland Park pitch behaved fairly during the 1st ODI. Batters did not face problems in scoring runs while the bowlers got something here and there. It is expected to behave the same way in the second ODI as well. However, the weather is going to be on the hotter side as compared to the previous game which means that the pitch will be a bit dry and will aid the spinners.

Team Analysis

India

India were asked to bowl first in the first game and Jasprit Bumrah did not take much time to give them the first breakthrough. He accounted for Janeman Malan early in the innings. R Ashwin also bowled tight lines from the other end after the powerplay was over. He removed Quinton de Kock and almost got van der Dussen (Rishabh Pant could not hold to a low catch). Debutant Venkatesh Iyer affected a run out to send back Aiden Markram. However, India could not get any further breakthrough for the next 30 overs.

The story is repeated in batting as well. Despite losing KL Rahul early, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli kept South Africa bowlers at bay till the 25th over. But as soon as they departed, South Africa were all over India and won the game by 31 runs. The experiment of playing Venkatesh Iyer in place of Suryakumar Yadav failed as the all-rounder got no chance in bowling and fell cheaply while batting. So, the team management may be compelled to bring in Surya. Rishabh Pant will also have to be a bit more responsible. In the bowling department, India will stick to Ashwin and Chahal and hope for something good in the middle overs.

South Africa

The hosts don't have a lot to think about. Since they won the game with a fine margin, South Africa is expected to play the same eleven. The only concern for them will be in the bowling department. In the absence of Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi and Andile Phehlukwayo will be expected to do the job. Young Marco Jansen, who went wicketless in the first game, will hope for a better outing. Keshav Maharaj was not too impressive either. However, South Africa still look like a good bunch of 11 players and thus will back themselves to beat India and claim the series.

Probable Playing XIs

India: Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul (c), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant (wk), Venkatesh Iyer/Suryakumar Yadav, R Ashwin, Shardul Thakur, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah

South Africa: Quinton de Kock (c), Janeman Malan, Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma, Rassie van der Dussen, David Miller, Andile Phehlukwayo, Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, Keshav Maharaj, Tabraiz Shamsi

Match Prediction

Conclusion: After humiliation in the 1st ODI, India will be gutted and thus the second ODI is likely to be a good contest. South Africa put on a courageous performance and have the home advantage as well. However, India are expected to come victorious.
