Smith and Tewatia

Gujarat Titans batter Rahul Tewatia played a couple of fine knocks in the recently concluded Indian Premier League 2022. Due to his superb knocks in crunch situations as well as his handy bowling, Tewatia emerged as one of the Indian cricketers who left their mark and proved their utility to the team. Following his impressive stint, Tewatia was perhaps expecting a national call-up from the selectors.

However, much to his surprise, Indian selectors ignored him while announcing the squad for the upcoming T20I bilateral series against Ireland. Post the squad announcement, Tewatia took to Twitter to share: “Expectations hurts”.

Notably, Hardik Pandya has been named the skipper of the squad for the tour and mostly all fresh players on the management's radar have gotten a chance as most of the senior players are touring England for a one-off rescheduled Test match, followed by a white-ball series.

Tewatia was hopeful of being added to the squad but after seeing his name not being part of the team, the former Rajasthan Royals all-rounder expressed his disappointment on social media. In response to his tweet, former South African skipper Graeme Smith has suggested that he should focus on his game and stay away from social media.

While speaking at Star Sports, Smith said that India has so many talented players and the Indian skipper and coach know which players they want to take to the T20 World Cup. "We know Tewatia has done so well but there is so much competition out there," Smith told Star Sports while discussing India's T20I squad for the Ireland tour.

Adding further, Smith suggested that Tewatia should maintain a distance from Twitter and instead focus on his game. "Make sure the next time the squad comes out, no one can leave you out because you have just dashed that door down," he added.
