Head to head

Pitch Report

There were two matches played at Al Amerat Cricket Ground Oman Cricket on the opening day of the T20 World Cup 2021. The pitch will favour the batters slightly but the ground has big boundaries. So, six-hitting will be a difficult task for the batsmen. If the batters can settle in and build their innings steadily, they can go on to play a big innings. Spinners and pacers both are expected to get some assistance from the pitch.

Team Analysis:

Scotland

Scotland will be keen to sustain the winning momentum as they have now claimed 3 successive victories in a short space of time, with 2 of those victories coming against Namibia and the Netherlands in the warm-up matches. Scotland were in a difficult spot at 53/6. However, Chris Greaves (45 runs) helped his team put up an incredible fightback, stitching crucial partnerships with Mark Wyatt (22 runs) and Josh Davey (8 runs) to help his side set a fighting target. Greaves then returned figures of 2/19 in 3 overs to stifle the Bangladesh chase. Bradley Wheal scalped 3/24 while Josh Davey and Mark Watt took a wicket each.

Scotland will hope for an improved showing from their top-order, which is certainly capable of better performances. George Munsey, Kyle Coetzer, Matthew Cross, Richie Berrington and Calum MacLeod are all good batsmen and they will look to get their team off to a good start on Tuesday.

“We understand that we have to play extremely well to beat sides. We certainly didn't play to our full potential,” Coetzer said before the match.

Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea were restricted to 129/9 by hosts Oman in the opening match of ICC Men's T20 World Cup. PNG captain Assad Vala top-scored with a valiant 56 from 43 balls. However, their lower-order failed miserably as Oman bowlers fought back in the end. PNG openers Tony Ura and Lega Siaka went back to the pavilion without troubling the scorers against Oman and they could again face some difficulties against Scotland's swing bowling. Their hopes for this match will rest on Assad Vala and Charles Amini, who are the two best players in the PNG team.

Conclusion:

A win against Papua New Guinea on Tuesday will put Scotland in the pole position to head to the Super 12s stage. As a result, the Scots will be eager to put in a good performance here. They definitely have the higher experience and possess better skill-sets among the two teams. Thus, Scotland are expected to win this game fairly easily. However, Papua New Guinea will also want to put in an improved show. But, it is hard to fathom anything other than a Scotland win on Tuesday afternoon.
