World No 1 Ashleigh Barty suffered an upset by 48th-ranked Spanish opponent Sara Sorribes Tormo as she got knocked out in the first round of the singles tournament at the Tokyo Games on Sunday. The Wimbledon Champion suffered a 6-3, 6-4 defeat in the singles event.

Barty looked not at her best as she committed 55 unforced errors as compared to Tormo’s 13 and got in only 54% of her first serves to her opponent’s 83%.

Meanwhile, the Australian and her partner Storm Sanders are through to the second round of the women's doubles.

After the win, Tormo said that she has been dreaming of this her whole life and she is happy to beat World No 1 on such a big stage.

"It's an amazing feeling, I still can't believe it. It's something incredible for me. It's something that I've been dreaming of all my life, being here and even more so beating the world number one. I'm super, super happy", said Tormo.

Sania Mirza-Ankita Raina out of doubles event

In other news, Indian tennis duo Sania Mirza and Ankita Raina got knocked out of the women’s doubles event after suffering defeat to Ukranian twins Nadiia and Liudmyla Kichenok.

The Indian duo was leading at one stage and had won the first set by holding their opponents to love but still went on to lose the match 6-0, 6-7, (8-10).

The match that lasted an hour and 33 minutes saw ups and downs throughout the three sets. After losing the first set, the Kichenok twins rallied to make it 5-5 in the third set. They then forced the set into a tie-breaker after making it 6-6 and won that 6-0.

While it was Sania Mirza’s fourth appearance in the Olympics, young Ankita Raina was playing her first game in the big event.
