The Indian men's hockey team's 3-0 win over Spain in the Pool A encounter along with Lovlina Borgohain, the first woman boxer from Assam at the Olympics, who registered a 3-2 win on split decision over Germany pugilist Nadine Apetz were the only real positives for the Indian contingent on Day 4 of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Meanwhile, this was the third successive day on which India failed to win a medal after Mirabai Chanu's silver-medal winning effort in the 49 kg women's event on Day 1.
Although much was expected from the shooting contingent which boasted of names like Manu Bhaker, Saurabh Chaudhary and Abhishek Verma, none of them failed to match the expectations. Table tennis and Badminton were the other two sports which the Indian fans were hoping would bring laurels but both of them disappointed with India's run at table tennis coming to an end. Although Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty recorded a straight game win over Ben Lane and Sean Vendy of Great Britain in Badminton - they couldn't secure a place in the next stage owing to their defeat earlier.
India's performance on Day 4 at Tokyo Olympics 2020:
Badminton: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won 21-17, 21-19 over Ben Lane and Sean Vendy of Great Britain but failed to make it to the next stage.
Boxing: Lovlina Borgohain advanced to women's welter quarterfinals with a split decision victory over Germany's Nadine Apetz. The 23-year-old will face former world champion and 4th seed Chen Nien-Chin in the quarterfinal of Women's Welter on July 30. A win here will assure India another medal irrespective of what happens in the semifinal.
Hockey: India men bounced back and registered a clinical 3-0 win after their heavy 1-7 defeat against Australia in this Pool A encounter. India will face Argentina on July 29.
Sailing: Vishnu Sarvanan still managed to be in the top 25 bracket achieving 20th, 24th, 23d and 22nd positive in the respective races. Varun Thakkar and KC Ganapathy had finished Race 1 of the Sailing event at the 18th spot.
Shooting: Manu Bhaker-Saurabh Chaudhary and Abhishek Verma-Yashaswini Deswal failed to qualify for 10m air pistol mixed team medal rounds. To make it worse, even Divyansh Panwar-Elavenil Valarivan and Anjum Moudgil-Deepak Kumar could not secure qualification for the finals.
Table Tennis: Sharath Kamal's 4-1 defeat against world champion China's Ma Long in Round 3 of men's singles brought an end to the country's campaign in table tennis.
