Pramod Bhagat beats Manoj Sarkar

After a spring of medals were collected by India in the Tokyo Paralympics 2020 Summer Games, the expectation of the sporting fanatics from the Indian athletes were rising every passing event. However, Day 8 (Wednesday) proved to be a disappointing one for India, as they not only slipped by a few places in the medal tally but also failed to secure any medal on the day. However, with two Indian shuttlers locking horns against one another, it was Pramod Bhagat who managed to progress into the next round.

With expectation high from the Indian athletes, especially in the track and field events, both Dharambir and Amit Kumar managed to deliver their best in the club throw final. On the other hand, in the remaining four events as well, the Indian contingents were not at their best. As a result of which India slipped to the 34th position by the end of Day 8 in the medal tally.

Indian athletes' performance on Wednesday, September 1:

Shooting- R3 Mixed 10m Air Rifle

In this mixed, Indian shooters Deepak Saini, Sidhartha Babu and Avani Lekhara were in action. In the qualification round on Day 8, Saini finished his rounds with a score of 624.9 and was placed 43rd whereas Sidhartha managed to end the qualification round on the 40th position courtesy to his score of 625.5. Furthermore gold medalist in the individual event, 19-year-old Avani ended the qualification round on the 27th position with a score of 629.7.

Badminton- Men’s Single SL3 Group Stage

Two Indian shuttlers Pramod Bhagat and Manoj Sarkar locked horns, wherein the former started aggressively and took home the first set. After which Sarkar made an emphatic comeback to take the match into the last game. Bhagat was way too dominant in the third and final set to stamp his authority over Sarkar and moved onto the next round.

Badminton- Women’s Singles SU5 Group Stage

Indian shuttler Palak Kohli was in action against Japan’s Ayako Suzuki. The latter proved to be too dominant for Kohli as she won the game in straight sets (21-4, 21-7) in a match that lasted just over 19 minutes.

Badminton- Mixed Doubles SL3 SU5 Group Stage

Pramod Bhagat and Palak Kohli paired up to face French top seeded shuttlers, Faustine Noel and Lucas Mazur. As the match started the French duo took the first game with ease to make a strong start. But Bhagat and Kohli bounced back to clinch the second game. In the final showdown set, Noel and Mazur inched by a whisker over the Indian duo as they won 21-19.

Athletics- Men’s Club Throw

With Dharambir and Amit Kumar in action, the former athlete started slow and could not manage to register his season best score of 25.59. With Amit Kumar fighting rigorously for a medal, it was Mexico’s Mario Hernandez whose throw of 30.25m eluded Kumar of his bronze medal. In this event Russian thrower Musa Taimazov broke the world and paralympic record with a throw of 35.42.

Swimming- Men’s 100m Breaststroke SB7

Indian swimmer Suyash Jadhav was disqualified from the event as Colombia’s Carlos Zarate took home the gold medal with a new Paralympic record of 1:12:01.
